Social Housing Alliance supports tent cities from Oppenheimer Park to Abbotsford

The Social Housing Alliance stands in solidarity with the tent city in Oppenheimer Park and all peoples’ tent cities. We stand with Oppenheimer Park residents in refusing to acknowledge colonial property rights, and support Indigenous stewardship of all Indigenous territories of Turtle Island. We condemn the City of Vancouver’s threats of eviction to Oppenheimer Park residents and its attempt to criminalize tenters by referring to them as “just little mischief makers.”1 We demand that rather than attempt to mask the crisis by providing temporary shelters, the City address the root causes of the homelessness crisis by stopping real estate speculation, depressing property prices, stopping gentrification, and building social housing for low-income people. The tent city in Oppenheimer Park is a sign of ongoing displacement that shuffles working and low-income people, Indigenous people displaced off their lands, and migrant and non-status workers between marginal spaces of the City of Vancouver and...
